“They talk about the Hollywood Walk of Fame – but no-one else has one of these!” Ken Dodd unveiled the fantastic Comedy Carpet in Blackpool this week. Hollywood’s Walk of Fame looks like Word Art compared to this beautiful collection of type.
The piece is made up of 160,000 letters individually cut from black and red granite with blue concrete and took five years to make. The pavement made up of jokes, songs and catchphrases of comedians and was designed by the artist Gordon Young. I was lucky enough to spend some time with Gordon on a college trip to Istanbul a couple of years ago. He’s a passionate man and has great vision.
The photographs in the papers of people walking across it really show the scale of the work, some of the phrases are said to be readable from the top of the Blackpool tower. I can’t wait to see it.
