Troll Hunter Review

Here at Oink we’re currently working on the DVD design for recently released Norwegian film Troll Hunter and were lucky enough to see preview screenings courtesy of our friends over at Momentum Pictures. http://www.piggy.co.uk/blog If you know little (or nothing) of the film, it follows three student filmmakers into the woods as they go after who they believe to be an illegal bear poacher. The poacher, of course, turns out to be the troll hunter of the title, and before long the filmmakers have invited themselves along for the ride.

Now if you’re thinking ‘here we go…another handheld film about being lost in the woods’ then leave your worries at the door of your Land Rover.

Although it’s shot in that ‘found-footage’ style which has now become so familiar, it’s a completely different feel to what is a noticeably horror-heavy subgenre. There’s some action, some tension, some horror, but running through it all is a tongue-in-cheek nod in the direction of Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield, with some of Norway’s top comedians filling a lot of the roles including Otto Jespersen as the title character.

The trolls themselves are taken directly from Scandinavian folklore – ugly, thick and either turning to stone or blowing up completely when exposed to sunlight, the director also chose to include the trolls’ legendary ability of being able to smell the blood of Christian men…

If you’re after a boisterous, entertaining romp through the Norwegian wilderness then you could do a lot worse than this.

Troll Hunter is now on general release across the UK and stay tuned to the blog and our other sites for news on the release of the DVD.
